January is an important period in hazelnut gardens when preparations are made for the beginning of a new season.
Despite being in the middle of winter, the yield of the next season can be increased with some operations.
- Winter Pruning: Winter pruning is important for regulating the shape of the hazelnut tree, increasing yield and cleaning diseased branches. During this period, branches that are dried, diseased or have pest nests should be cut.
- Soil Preparation: If there are deficiencies in the garden soil, barn manure and organic fertilization can be started in January. Especially phosphorus and potassium fertilizers support the root development of the plant and increase fruit set.
- Pest and Disease Control: Some pests and diseases that are not visible to the eye during the winter months hide under the bark of the trees or in the soil. For this reason, gardens should be checked regularly and pesticides should be applied when deemed necessary.
- Irrigation: During the dry winter months, additional irrigation may be required, especially in young hazelnut gardens.
- Precautions Against Frost Damage: Late spring frosts may negatively affect hazelnut flowers. Therefore, to take precautions against frost events, flammable materials such as brushwood in the garden can be burned to create smoke. In this way, air temperature can be increased by a few degrees and frost damage can be reduced.
Important Notes:
- Weather Conditions: Operations carried out in January should be adjusted according to weather conditions. Operations such as pruning or spraying should be postponed in rainy and cold weather.
- Expert Help: If you are undecided on any issue regarding hazelnut cultivation, it is recommended that you get help from an agricultural engineer or agricultural consultant.
- Regional Differences: Climate and soil conditions may differ between regions where hazelnut cultivation is carried out. Therefore, you should prefer applications specific to your region.
