In hazelnut farming, April is an important month when spring begins and vegetative activities accelerate. Applications to be made during this period directly affect the yield.
Things to be done in April:
1.Pruning and Branch Cleaning
-Pruning operations that start in March should be completed at the beginning of April.
-Dried, diseased and unproductive branches should be cleaned.
-Excess shoots in the hearths should be removed and air flow should be provided.
2.Pest Control
-Observations should be made for pests such as hazelnut worm and cone mite.
-If deemed necessary, spraying should be done with appropriate inputs.
-During spraying, attention should be paid to the flowering period so that bees are not harmed.
-If it has not been done by the end of March, a fight can be made against hazelnut gallfly (the second fight should be done 20 days after the first fight), hazelnut leaf borer and dalekıran.
3.Fertilization
-Based on soil analysis, nutrients found to be deficient should be supplemented.
-Nitrogenous fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate can be applied during this period.
-Organic fertilizers and composts can also be applied to improve soil structure.
4.Bud Development Monitoring
-Flowering has started or is about to start. Therefore, care should be taken against the risk of frost.
-Precautions (such as mulching, smoking) can be taken in areas where frost events may occur.
5.Garden Cleaning
-Leaves, fruit residues and grass accumulated under branches should be cleaned.
-Thus, disease and pest shelters are eliminated.
-Weed control can be started towards the end of the month.
