October is a crucial month in hazelnut cultivation, as the plant enters dormancy and begins preparations for the new season. Practices carried out during this period are crucial for both yield and quality.

1. Post-Harvest Care and Cleaning

• After harvest, hazelnut, husk (shell), branch, and leaf debris remaining on the ground should be collected and burned or composted.
• Garden cleaning prevents the harborage of pests (especially cone mites and twig borers).
• Dried, broken, or diseased branches should be pruned and removed.

2. Soil Cultivation and Fertilization

• Soil compacted during the summer can be cultivated shallowly in October (especially in orchards with low slopes).
• If a soil analysis has been performed, appropriate fertilizers can be used based on the results.
• Fertilizer should be mixed into the soil and not left exposed.

3. Seedling Planting and Rejuvenation

• The most suitable time for hazelnut planting is between October and November. If a new garden is to be established, planting holes are prepared this month.
• Rejuvenation pruning or re-potting can be planned for older gardens.

4. Pest and Disease Control

To prevent overwintering of hazelnut weevil, cone mite, and thrips:

• The garden should be kept clean.
• Areas under the bark that could form overwintering holes should be checked.
• Fall pesticide application can be made if necessary (with expert advice).

5. Erosion and Moisture Protection Measures

• Terracing or planting cover crops can be considered in sloping gardens.
