July Practices in Hazelnut Orchards

July is a critical period in hazelnut cultivation, when the crop begins to ripen and final preparations are made before harvest.

Things to be done in July:

            1.Pest and Disease Management

  • Controlling pests such as the boll weevil, hazelworm, green skunk, and American white butterfly is important.
  • Observations are made, and biotechnical traps or licensed plant protection products are used if necessary.
  • Fungicide application can be made under suitable weather conditions, especially for fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and hazelnut anthracnose.

  • 2.Irrigation (Depending on Climate)
  • While rainfall is generally sufficient in the Black Sea region, supplemental irrigation may be required during the dry months of July.
  • Irrigation is especially important for young orchards and for good fruit development.

           3.Weed Control and Soil Cultivation

  • Weeds in the hazelnut garden should be removed mechanically.
  • Leaf samples for analysis should be taken in the second half of this month.
  • Soil samples can be taken from this period until the end of December.

          4.Pre-Harvest Preparations

  • Unnecessary branches and bushes are cleared from the orchard.
  • Hazelnut threshing floors are leveled and cleaned.
  • Harvesting equipment such as nets, bags, crates, and baskets are checked and prepared.
