    May is a very critical period in terms of seasonal maintenance and yield-enhancing applications in hazelnut farming.

    Applications made in this month both support the healthy development of hazelnuts and provide protection against diseases and pests.

    Things to do in May;

    1- Fertilization:

    • Second half of nitrogenous fertilizer: If you applied nitrogenous fertilization in spring, you can apply the second half of the recommended amount starting from mid-May. Nitrogen given during this period positively affects the yield of the following year. Sprinkle the fertilizer approximately 50-60 cm away from the bottom of the beds, under the branches, and mix it into the soil by hoeing.
    • Leaf fertilization (if necessary): If micro element deficiency is determined according to the soil and leaf analysis results, appropriate leaf fertilization can be done. Leaf fertilization should be done in cool and cloudy weather, at low density (0.1-0.5%), and a suitable adhesive should be used.

    2- Fighting Pests and Diseases:

    • Hazelnut worm: When the fruits reach the size of a lentil (3-4 mm), spraying can be done against hazelnut worm. If there is also hazelnut green skunk in the garden, effective drugs should be preferred against both pests.
    • Hazelnut buck beetle (flyworm): The time to fight against this pest is also May.
    • Aphid: Fighting can be done against aphid pest.
    • Maybug: Adults should be collected and killed when seen. If the density is high, soil spraying can be considered.
    • Comma cochineal: Before the buds burst, pest control can be done with pesticides against this pest.
    • Dalkıran: Infested and dried branches can be collected and burned. Pest control can also be done with pesticides.
    • Hazelnut gall fly: Spraying can be done by monitoring the signs of damage and if deemed necessary.
    • Powdery mildew: Chemical control can be done against powdery mildew disease.
    • Bacterial blight: Spraying can be done against this disease.

    3-Weed Control:
